Whether you’re an owner or a tenant, getting the keys to your new home may require you to set up the utilities for it. While it is not that difficult or time-consuming a task, it is one of those bureaucratic hurdles that is just no fun. Let’s bite through the sour apple, and get it over with!

How much is the security deposit needed?
Signing a utilities contract requires the applicant to pay a security deposit. Upon the termination of your lease or selling of your house the security deposit can be used to pay for the final utility bills. Alternatively, it is simply refunded to you upon termination. The below chart shows the deposit amount you’re required to pay:
The application process is simple and you can do it in many different ways:
1)Apply online by going to SP Service’s website and applying directly. Filling up the online application form takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
2)Apply via the SP Utilities smartphone app, downloadable on the iOS or Android app store.
3) Apply directly at a customer service centre. Choose any of the locations below and settle it personally. Remember to bring the required documents!

For HDB Build-To-Order (BTO) flats, turn-on appointments are not needed as electrical and water supplies are pre-turned on. For gas turn-on, please call City Gas at 1800-555-1661 for an appointment after receiving the email confirmation on the account opening.

How far in advance do I need to set up my utilities?
It takes approximately two weeks for your utilities to be switched on.
Online: 3 business days, upon receipt of the required documents and initial security deposit if application is received before 3pm on weekdays, or 12 noon on Sat/eve of Public Holiday. (Appointments are subject to availability)
In person: Next business day if application is received before 3pm on weekdays, or 1pm on Sat/ eve of PH. (Appointments are subject to availability)
Mobile app: Next business day if application is received before 3pm on weekdays, or 12 noon on Sat/ eve of PH. (Appointments are subject to availability)
For express (urgent) requests:
If you just got your keys but need the gas to cook a housewarming feast the very same night, a same-day express turn-on can be arranged. An express service charge of $60 is applicable on working weekdays/Saturdays (services is not available on Sundays). At least 3 hours’ advance notice is required for this service, and appointments are subject to availability.
