Fingers were pointed, shots were taken, and the brouhaha only subsided when it was concluded that the fate of 38@Oxley would subsequently be determined by a ministerial committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast forward a few months later, and the ministerial committee has spoken. In a report which was released two days ago, the committee outlined the three available options: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retain the property and gazette it for conservation, or as a National Monument<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retain the dining room and demolish the rest of the property <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fully demolish the property, with the understanding that this \u201ccould result in the loss of a historically significant property\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14399\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14399\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/lee-hsien-loong-siblings-e1522764752708.jpg\" alt=\"lee hsien loong siblings\" width=\"720\" height=\"303\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14399\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Lee Wei Ling, Lee Hsien Loong, and Lee Hsien Yang.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/observer.news\/assets\/featured-leehsienloong.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its report, the Ministerial Committee also details the history of 38@Oxley, including nuggets of information about its architectural style.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>38@Oxley: A brief history<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Built in 1898, 38@Oxley was one of a pair of bungalows. The property was nicknamed \u201cCastor\u201d (and its \u201ctwin\u201d at 40 Oxley Road, \u201cPollux\u201d), referencing twin brothers in Roman mythology. After being bought and sold multiple times, &#8220;Castor&#8221; was demolished, and redeveloped into three lots. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14397\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14397\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14397\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/40-oxley-road-e1522764462821.jpg\" alt=\"40 oxley road\" width=\"720\" height=\"514\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14397\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What 40 Oxley Road looks like today.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the Japanese occupied Singapore between 1942 and 1945, they turned the properties along Oxley Road into comfort houses. When the war was over, then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew rented 38 Oxley Road together with his wife, Kwa Geok Choo. At that point in time, they paid 80 Straits dollars per month as rent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 1965, Lee Kwan Yew and Kwa Geok Choo decided to buy 38@Oxley. Security had became a major concern; in a bid to fortify the property against assassination attempts and other threats, the couple added steel gates, additional brick walls and bullet-proof windows. After a police constable was shot dead at the back of the house in the 1960s, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Kuan Yew wanted to secure the area, and did so by absorbing another house into the property. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The unique architectural style of 38@Oxley<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NHB report bills 38@Oxley as an &#8220;Early Style&#8221; bungalow which borrows from both the East and West. While the main structure of the house is reminiscent of a traditional Anglo-Indian bungalow, tweaks include a raised-floor construction, verandahs and overhanging roof eaves. Design-wise, 38@Oxley comes with a myriad of features which were \u201cpopular in bungalows of its time\u201d; these include full-length French windows, fretted timber balusters, classical columns, pilasters and plinths, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What 38@Oxley says about the late Lee Kwan Yew<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its report, the Ministerial Committee states that 38@Oxley has gone through several additions and alterations, but still has its \u201coriginal form and architectural character\u201d intact. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14398\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14398\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14398\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/lee-kwan-yew-e1522764467497.jpg\" alt=\"lee kwan yew\" width=\"720\" height=\"409\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14398\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">According to the Ministerial Committee, 38@Oxley stands for the values that Lee Kwan Yew exemplified.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.jsstatic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/04\/LKY_fullerton.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how the Ministerial Committee puts it: \u201cAs the home of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore\u2019s founding Prime Minister, 38 Oxley Road stands for the values that he and his wife exemplified both in their public and private lives \u2013 frugality and discipline in particular.
