One caveat: these flats are pretty rare, and it might be difficult to get your hands on one of them. Don\u2019t give up and start looking at condominiums or landed property, though &#8211; you can always purchase two adjoining flats and convert them into a single property. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This (obviously!) isn\u2019t as straightforward as buying a regular flat; you\u2019ll need to get approval from HDB, and there are certain guidelines to keep in mind when you\u2019re renovating your flat. But in exchange, you\u2019ll get an exceptionally spacious apartment (up to 1,830 sqft worth of space!) at an irresistible price. We think it\u2019s worth it! <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 1: Get approval from HDB<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, download <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hdb.gov.sg\/cs\/infoweb\/residential\/buying-a-flat\/resale\/combining-adjoining-flat-conversion-scheme\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HDB\u2019s conversion scheme application form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Complete the form, and submit it to their <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hdb.gov.sg\/cs\/infoweb\/contact-us&amp;rendermode=preview\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resale Operations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> department. Then sit back, and wait to hear from HDB on whether you may proceed! <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 2: Work out your finances<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say you\u2019re purchasing two adjoining flats at the same time. If that\u2019s the case, you\u2019ll be able to treat the two flats as a single unit, and apply for one housing loan to cover the purchase of both flats. In the event that you\u2019re buying a flat that\u2019s next to your current unit, however, you must first discharge your existing housing loan, before entering into a new loan. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 3: Converting your flats<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve purchased both flats, it\u2019s time to convert the two flats into a single unit! Engage a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hdb.gov.sg\/cs\/infoweb\/residential\/living-in-an-hdb-flat\/renovation&amp;rendermode=preview\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">registered renovation contractor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and have them construct one or more openings of at least 1 metre by 2 metres between the two units. On top of that, you\u2019ll also need your contractor to remove the electricity, water and gas meters for one of the two flats. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Step 4: Selling your converted flat<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if you want to sell your converted flat? Like any other homeowner, you\u2019ll have to wait till the Minimum Occupation Period is up before you do so. Do note that flats may <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be subdivided once they\u2019re converted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to this, if one of your two original flats was purchased from HDB, you\u2019ll have to pay a resale levy when you sell your converted flat.
