If you\u2019re a cyclist, you have cause to rejoice!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Singapore\u2019s Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) recently announced in a joint statement that having bicycle parking spaces will be a requirement for new development works\u00a0 applied to URA. If this doesn\u2019t encourage more Singaporeans to use a bike for commuting, and move towards a car-lite society, we don\u2019t know what will!<\/span><\/p>\n

New bicycle parking requirements to be enforced<\/strong><\/h3>\n

These bicycle parking requirements will depend on two things – firstly, property type, and secondly, LTA\u2019s zoning categories. As a general rule of thumb, residential developments will need to have one bicycle parking space for every four to six units. Zone 1 developments (in the CBD and Marina Bay) and Zone 2 developments (within a 400m radius from train stations) will require more parking spaces as compared to Zone 3 developments. <\/span><\/p>\n

Residential developments aside, the same rule goes for commercial developments, hotels, business developments, healthcare facilities, community centres, places of worship, and sports and recreation complexes. Buildings which are undergoing redevelopment will also have to abide by the new rule.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the URA, it\u2019s hoping to achieve two things with this rule. Firstly, it wants to \u201cfacilitate more people to take up cycling as a commuting mode\u201d; at the same time, it’s also seeking to \u201cminimise indiscriminate parking in public places.\u201d Riders who toss oBikes and Mobikes carelessly by the road, this refers to you!<\/span><\/p>\n

What do cyclists think?<\/strong><\/h3>\n
