Ramadan is here once again. For all our friends who’re fasting during this period, we know that they don’t always have time to prepare their iftar (evening meal) at home. Either that, you and your loved ones might just be looking to try something different in this food paradise we call home. <\/span><\/p>\n

If you’re thinking of places to break fast, let us give you a hand by picking the most accessible places for you to do so. These seven Halal-certified eateries (and one Halal-friendly joint) are all within 5 minutes walk from MRT stations<\/strong>, and are popular with residents who live in the area. \nNorth:<\/b><\/h3>\n

When you walk in, this family-run joint<\/a> has a welcoming interior that makes you feel you’ve been invited to an abang’s 1960s home. There’s a trishaw out front, and vintage items such as sewing machines and gramophones inside. The food, which includes their signature nasi ambeng sets with a portion of almost every dish, is down-to-earth, home-style Malay cuisine.<\/p>\n

Due to a high volume of diners breaking fast, the eatery recommends that they reach before 6:30PM — not difficult as they’re just a five-minute walk from Yishun MRT.<\/p>\n

Frequented by students from the nearby Republic Polytechnic, this huge food hall has every type of Halal food imaginable, from\u00a0Chinese-style stir-fried dishes to sambal stingray. There are plenty of big round tables, so you can even bring your grandparents along!<\/span><\/p>\n

Afghanistan Family Restaurant<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Nearest MRT: Tampines East (DT33)<\/p>\n

Set in a kopitiam environment, this well-known Indian Muslim eatery used to be out of reach of Singaporeans living beyond Tampines — until the recent opening of the Tampines East MRT station. First-timers will be intimidated by the extensive menu, but old timers swear by the murtabaks and chicken briyani.<\/p>\n

Did we mention that this place is open 24 hours, too?<\/p>\n

VeganBurg<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Nearest MRT: Eunos (EW7)<\/p>\n

VeganBurg is a 100% plant-based burger joint<\/a> serving not just vegans and vegetarians, but also our Muslim friends who eat Halal-friendly food not of animal origin. Located in Eunos, it’s also convenient for those doing their Hari Raya shopping at the Paya Lebar night markets. (Note that Veganburg is not MUIS Halal-certified.)<\/span><\/p>\n

For this year’s Ramadan season, the eatery launched the Malay-influenced Rasa Sayang Burg. The burger features a seasoned and breaded “chicken” wheat protein patty, a vegan sunny side up egg (it’s not real egg), vegetables, sambal, caramelised onions and creamy vegan aioli (garlic mayonnaise). It sounds like it packs a ton of flavour and pretty substantial. But as it is entirely plant-based, you probably won’t get that uncomfortable <\/span>gelak\u00a0<\/span><\/i>feeling after wolfing down the burger. <\/span><\/p>\n

Want more? Order your burger as a set; you\u2019ll get coconut fries, as well as rose bandung and chendol ice cream (all soy-based), which ensures your sweet tooth is more than satisfied. <\/span><\/p>\n

Located at Bay Hotel<\/a>, this place serves up Halal-certified Indonesian fare with a modern twist, and prepared using freshly-plucked herbs from the restaurant’s own herb garden. You might also be tempted to skip the a la carte menu for the dinner buffet. Swing by on Friday or Saturday, and there’s a BBQ station doling fresh meat and seafood dishes such as flower crab and fresh tiger prawns.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gastronomad<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Gastronomad<\/a> has its roots as an online caterer specialising in dessert tables and buffet spreads, and they’ve recently established their own restaurant in the Upper Thomson area. Over here, you\u2019ll get modern European cuisine with an emphasis on fresh produce, meaning no shortcuts. Chef-owner Wahidah Jumahat’s recipes are passed down from her mother, but she\u2019s made a few tweaks here and there to keep the dishes fresh and relevant for contemporary tastes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here, you can consider pairing your mains with zero-alcohol Halal “wine” made from grape extract. If you\u2019re not sure what would pair well with your food, ask the friendly staff for a recommendation!<\/span><\/p>\n

Ameen Makan House<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Specialising in Northern Indian cuisine, Ameen Makan House has a range of tandoor dishes such as meat skewers and naan. But its customers have also reviewed its other dishes positively, including the clearly-named Thai chicken egg sambal fried rice. It seems like a close fight between this and Ameen’s signature Singapura fried rice, which is available with chicken or beef and “served with hot and spicy sauce and egg and chips”, just to make it clear.<\/p>\n

Japan is seeing is fair share of Muslim visitors, including Malays from Singapore (especially millennials). But there’s one reason to stay home for a Japanese fix: Halal ramen. <\/span><\/p>\n

At the Halal-certified Isuramuya<\/a>, chefs\u00a0import their ingredients from Japan by air and prepare bowls of chicken ramen using<\/span>\u00a0traditional Japanese techniques. Surprisingly, they use beef bone broth instead of chicken. Besides ramen, there’s a whole range of Japanese dishes, including sashimi, to satisfy different taste buds.<\/span><\/p>\n
