Naturally, this has spurred the discussion of whether or not this will have any impact on the <em>feng shui<\/em> of the house. Personally, I love the idea of an open kitchen, and I intend to have one at home too! But of course, me doing what I do, I\u2019m racking my brain as to whether or not an open kitchen is a good idea from a feng shui perspective. After all,<strong> open kitchens did not exist in the past, so a good way to approach this is to look at the fundamentals of feng shui.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start the discussion by exploring exactly why the kitchen has always been given much attention in feng shui.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feng shui will never veer away from the concept of \u2018<em>qi<\/em>\u2019 (\u6c23), which the Chinese ancestors saw as the ether which binds everything together and the unseen energy which determines how well life thrives. It sounds very \u201cpseudo-science\u201d, but that\u2019s just the way feng shui currently is \u2013 a very abstract way of viewing the world. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As long as you\u2019re applying feng shui, you\u2019re applying these traditional views the Chinese ancestors held as well. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all know the kitchen is a part of the house that we can\u2019t ignore when it comes to feng shui, but what exactly warrants the kitchen to be given <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so much<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> attention in the past and even till today? Let\u2019s explore some of these reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-kitchen-is-one-of-the-six-preparations\"><b>The kitchen is one of the \u201cSix Preparations\u201d<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We call this the \u516d\u4e8b (<em>liushi<\/em>) in Chinese \u2013 the six must-do tasks when building a home. But some of the tasks \u2013 such as building a well, our own roads and the setting up of a vault for storage for grain storage \u2013 no longer apply to us in modern times. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, priority was of course given to the kitchen and main door, which eventually led to the writing of the the feng shui classic\u300a\u9633\u5b85\u4e09\u8981\u300b(<em>yangzhaishanyao<\/em>) book, which focused on the positioning of the main door, master bedroom and kitchen \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/feng-shui-steps-buy-property\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a topic I wrote about<\/a> some time ago.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-exactly-does-the-kitchen-do-in-feng-shui\"><b>What exactly does the kitchen do in feng shui?<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ancient Chinese believed that whatever laws that can be observed in nature will unfold in the same way within your house as well. Your house is still as a little universe unto itself that aren\u2019t free from these laws, which is why you\u2019ll often hear of certain sectors being negative and others being positive. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying to give a \u2018scientific\u2019 explanation on why the kitchen is so important goes back to the concept of &#8216;<em>qi<\/em>&#8216;. In traditional feng shui, there\u2019s a term we call \u85cf\u98ce\u805a\u6c14 (<em>jufengzangqi<\/em>), which basically refers to the ability to hold and retain positive \u2018<em>qi<\/em>\u2019 within the house. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The kitchen was of course seen as <\/strong><\/span><strong><i>the only <\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>place in the house that\u2019s able to generative positive \u2018<em>qi<\/em>\u2019, whereas the \u2018<em>qi<\/em>\u2019 of other areas are out of our control and at the mercy of things not within our control.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chinese classic of feng shui\u300a\u516b\u5b85\u660e\u955c\u300b(<em>bazhaimingjing<\/em>) puts it in another way, mentioning that the kitchen is described as a sector in the home which has to ability to \u538b\u715e\u8fce\u751f (<em>yashayingsheng<\/em>), which means the kitchen is believed to be able to negate a bad sector of the house.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concept the kitchen generating good &#8216;<em>qi<\/em>&#8216; was so deeply held by people that that they even had a ritual for it. In a practice known as \u8fdb\u706b (<em>jinhuo<\/em>), the stove is lit for almost the whole day and this is believed to get rid of the impurities of the house, which I suppose translates into the removing of unwanted moisture or scent after the house is completed. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This traditional practice is something I still encourage my clients to do, albeit in a more evolved form of cooking a sumptuous home-cooked dinner on the first night of them moving into their new home.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-17973\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1140\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/open-plan-kitchen-condo.jpg\" alt=\"Open kitchen condo\" class=\"wp-image-17973\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/open-plan-kitchen-condo.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/open-plan-kitchen-condo-940x627.jpg 940w, https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/open-plan-kitchen-condo-440x294.jpg 440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1140px) 100vw, 1140px\" \/><figcaption>Open kitchens should not be exposed to wind and should have a good cooker hood to prevent grease and fumes from reaching the living area.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-taboo-of-having-wind-at-the-stove-\u7089\u7076\u5fcc\u98ce\"><b>The taboo of having wind at the stove <\/b>(\u7089\u7076\u5fcc\u98ce)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The whole worry behind having an open kitchen in the house is related to the taboo of having wind at the stove.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s an old saying called \u7089\u7076\u5fcc\u98ce (<em>luzaojifeng<\/em>) where \u7089\u7076 refers to your stove and \u5fcc\u98ce basically means \u201chaving wind at the stove is a taboo\u201d. Very much like us in the modern times, people in the past shared a similar concern of not wanting fumes or ashes from the fire wood or coal to drift into other areas of the home. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The points in the previous section also play a role as well, in that we don\u2019t wish for the air or \u2018<em>qi<\/em>\u2019 within the kitchen to unnecessarily dissipate into the other areas of the house.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An enclosed kitchen would of course alleviate all these issues, but it doesn\u2019t mean that an open kitchen would be an absolute taboo as long as the required measures are taken to adhere to the rules stated above, which is to prevent too much air flow moving from the kitchen into other areas of the house.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-should-you-have-an-open-kitchen-in-your-home\"><b>Should you have an open kitchen in your home?<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open kitchens can be nice, but my opinion is that, ideally, these open kitchen concepts should not contravene the rules set out above. If your open kitchen makes your living room feel like a kitchen as well, then we have a problem.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I mean here is that as long as you take the measures to make sure your kitchen does not end up contaminating your living room or other areas of your house, that\u2019s perfectly fine and I\u2019m sure everyone already has already considered this. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>You could, of course, consider designs that allow you enclose or open up your kitchen as and when you want it, which many people have done.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line is, I don\u2019t think there is a need to worry about having open kitchens in your home.
