Interior design is different from any form of artistry. When Rembrandt painted the Night Watch, he didn\u2019t have a client looking over his shoulder going \u201c<\/span>maybe make the chicken more prominent, my son thinks that will be funny. And draw more moustaches on the men<\/span>.\u201d Interior designers deal with that all the time \u2013 their work is a hodge podge of their artistic delus\u2026visions, and confused client input. That\u2019s why we have:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. The kitchen island<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Kitchen Island<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A kitchen island is an expensive, space consuming counter in the middle of the kitchen. It often comes with high seats (so it can act like a bar), and some kind of overpriced surface. Marble is a favourite.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since kitchen islands are often outfitted with sinks or even drink dispensers, they often require additional plumbing, and <\/span>can raise costs by as much as a whopping $8,000<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now ask yourself for a minute: what exactly is the point of a kitchen island? One of the main challenges of kitchen design is to <\/span>minimise <\/span>the space taken up by counter tops. Hence the L-shaped layout, overhead cabinets, and so forth.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the point of working so <\/span>hard to minimise <\/span>space taken by counter tops, just so <\/span>you can<\/span> add another giant counter top in the middle of things<\/span>? <\/span><\/p>\n

And what is it you would intend the kitchen island for? To cut things on? Pour drinks on? Sit at and eat?<\/span> <\/span>There is a device that will do all that for about a tenth of the cost. It\u2019s called a table. <\/span><\/p>\n

And as for alcohol, I doubt friends or relatives will think less of you if you pour drinks at a table, instead of what\u2019s basically a fake bar counter.<\/span> <\/span>Rethink this waste of your renovation fund and an\u00a0overrated interior design feature. Especially if you want to do up your home without taking a renovation loan.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Tiny, forced, walk-in wardrobes<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Walk-in wardrobes are magnificent \u2013 if they are spacious enough to double as small\u00a0<\/span>changing rooms. That\u2019s kind of the whole point.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

But there has been a trend where interior designers are made to force walk-ins into spaces that were never meant to hold them; like shoebox apartments. The end result often resembles a top of the line, stylishly designed port-a-toilet, like the kind used for VIPs at a beach rave.<\/span><\/p>\n

This will give an already small bedroom the floor s<\/span>pace of an average dog kennel, while raising maximum wardrobe capacity by maybe one dress. <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s an expensive example of form over function. It\u2019s best to listen to interior designers when they explain some small rooms will look better <\/span>without <\/span>the walk-in.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Wallpapering<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Wallpapering can cost anywhere from $120 to $300 per roll applied (the cost will drop with more rolls). Overall, it often comes to about twice the cost of having a room painted. But the expense isn\u2019t the worst part.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wallpaper is ridiculously easy to damage. Even if a stray table corner or chair back doesn\u2019t gouge a hole in it, Singapore\u2019s climate will destroy it. The heat and humidity often causes it to warp and form bubbles, or to peel. Turning an air conditioner on and off in the same room just makes it worse.<\/span><\/p>\n

On top of that, there\u2019s no guarantee that in a few years the same design of wallpaper will be available. Now picture this:<\/span><\/p>\n

You have three strips of wallpaper on your living room wall. The middle strip deteriorates, and you can\u2019t replace it because they don\u2019t produce it anymore. Now what?<\/span><\/p>\n

If you replace just the middle strip, it makes your room look like a patchwork hillbilly shack. If you want to replace all of it, you\u2019re forking out money to strip everything and re-apply a new design. Wallpapering is expensive, and maintenance is difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Tiny, tiny tiles<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The hardest part of cleaning a tiled surface is the grouting. That\u2019s the space between the tiles. In a high humidity environment, like a toilet, it breeds bacteria faster than a NS man\u2019s armpit <\/span>on<\/span> a three week field camp. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now with big tiles<\/span>,<\/span> there\u2019s less grouting to clean. But if you have lots of tiny tiles forming a mosaic, good luck go<\/span>ing at it with that toothbrush. It will turn a mouldy shade of green otherwise. <\/span><\/p>\n

It’s an\u00a0overrated interior design feature and trust contractors or interior designers when they advise against tiling in certain rooms. <\/span><\/p>\n

5. Children\u2019s theme rooms<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

I\u2019m sure this is cute and all, but remember that children <\/span>grow up. When your son turns 14 and starts blasting gangsta rap,<\/span> he may not appreciate a room wallpapered with litt<\/span>le teddy bears in party ha<\/span>ts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Theme rooms are fine if you don\u2019t go overboard <\/span>with<\/span> costs (<\/span>just remember<\/span> you may have to undo it all later), or if they are long term themes (<\/span>e.g.<\/span> making the room resemble a cottage.) <\/span><\/p>\n

Also consider that, if you intend to rent out the room when Junior goes to university, it\u2019s easier if the theme is \u201ccottage\u201d as opposed to \u201cMy Little Pony.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Make everything white including the furniture<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"All<\/a><\/p>\n

Minimalist, \u201cwhite design\u201d<\/span> is supposedly<\/span> from<\/span> Scandinavian countries. <\/span>I<\/span> <\/span>doubt<\/span> this, as I <\/span>have been to several of those countries and their homes don\u2019t resemble the inside of a hospital<\/span>. But it\u2019s common in magazines, so interior designers <\/span>get asked to do it a lot.<\/span><\/p>\n

While you\u2019re indulging in near blindness from the reflected sunlight, <\/span>do be careful around your<\/span> furniture. White fabrics, <\/span>especially <\/span>white leather, is known to stain easily. One careless mug of coffee can result in a $1,200 upholstery job. <\/span><\/p>\n

You should also get used to the empty look, because almost <\/span>anything with colour will<\/span> ruin the theme. <\/span>A family picture, a yellow umbrella stand, a single green lamp, and\u00a0<\/span>the entire \u201cwhite look\u201d is gone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Your home ornaments are mostly confined to steel, glass, and white ceramics or plastics. Challenge yourself to not get bored<\/span>!<\/span><\/p>\n

Aesthetics and practicality don\u2019t have to clash. <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

A hallmark of great interior design is one that marries the two. Don\u2019t get the wrong idea from design magazines: the rooms you see in there are staged. They aren\u2019t meant to be lived in, and don\u2019t take into account things like pets, children, or the fact that may want an ugly massage chair in the living room.<\/span><\/p>\n

Buy a home, not a stage<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
