{"id":24230,"date":"2019-04-07T11:50:29","date_gmt":"2019-04-07T03:50:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.99.co\/blog\/singapore\/?p=24230"},"modified":"2022-06-13T17:06:28","modified_gmt":"2022-06-13T09:06:28","slug":"condo-vs-hdb-living-how-does-it-affect-your-child","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/condo-vs-hdb-living-how-does-it-affect-your-child\/","title":{"rendered":"Condo vs. HDB living: How Does It Affect Your Child?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p>Is it better for children to be raised in a condominium or HDB flat? <span class=\"s1\">Here&#8217;s what you need to consider:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">What are the main factors that impact your child?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Let&#8217;s take a look at how these two properties affect a child, in terms of:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Safety<\/li>\n<li>Amenities<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to Singaporean culture<\/li>\n<li>Social access<\/li>\n<li>Ability to raise pets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">1. <\/span>Safety<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As a gated community, condos are comparatively safer than HDB estates. <\/span>Most condos now require keycards to access the lifts; you can&#8217;t even get to a floor without the resident buzzing you up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> Apart from its high-level security system, it has an extra layer of protection &#8211; security guards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24011\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24011\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24011 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/security-guard.jpg\" alt=\"condos versus landed properties for expats\" width=\"650\" height=\"436\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Apart from security, condos have numerous sets of digital eyes as an extra layer of protection.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You can pinpoint them in a condo easily. In formal attire, they patrol the grounds of a condo to regulate its facilities and residents:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They ensure that dogs are leashed, swimming pools are clean, and decks are dry. And as children are known to be rough with their toys, security also ensure that they don&#8217;t destroy the equipment in playgrounds <\/span><span class=\"s1\">by watching over such areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24699\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24699\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-24699\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/cctv-for-condo.jpg\" alt=\"condo vs hdb living: how does it affect your child\" width=\"650\" height=\"397\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24699\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CCTV footage in condos is just as good in HDB estates.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Apart from that, security guards also monitor the footage of CCTVs littered around the estate. But there are a number of CCTVs around HDB estates, as well. Its footage is as good as that of a condo&#8217;s. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">2. <\/span>Amenities<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">HDB estates are now pretty much up to par with the number of amenities near condos. Playgrounds, multi-purpose courts, swimming complexes, and supermarkets are within walking distance of both types of property.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21090\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21090\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-21090\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/condo-pool.jpg\" alt=\"condo vs hdb: how it affects your child\" width=\"650\" height=\"391\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21090\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shared communal spaces around HDB estates will usually be more occupied compared to those within condos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What sets them apart is usability. Amenities within HDB estates tend to be more crowded than those in condos. Of course, this also depends on what time you want to use these amenities:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As everyone&#8217;s home from school or work, shared communal spaces become more crowded toward the evening. You&#8217;ll probably find the amenities unpopulated at an earlier time, but without guarantee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Amenities are easier to book in newer condos via a mobile application. Plus, they tend to be vacant due to a smaller population size. (Take this with a grain of salt as there are condos with a higher population density.)<\/p>\n<p>Vacant amenities mean your\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">children have a higher chance of having the court or swimming pool to themselves. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">If they&#8217;re sporty or in a sports CCA, this will definitely be a huge bonus. Air-con clubhouses are also good for birthday parties, unlike HDB&#8217;s open void decks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">3. Exposure to Singaporean culture<\/span><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24702\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24702 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/diverse-asian-kids.jpg\" alt=\"kids raising their hands outside of home\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">HDB estates are a melting pot, where children can be immersed in multi-cultural Singapore<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Children acclimate to local culture faster through exposure. Like osmosis, children absorb what they routinely hear, see, or eat. This is easy to find in HDB estates &#8211; hearing Singaporean accents and speech, seeing different races, and eating Singaporean snacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why? Because HDB flats have a racial quota to prevent single-race domination over an area. With 82 per cent of Singaporeans living in the area, your children will be exposes to a melting pot of cultures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9571\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9571\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9571\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Malay_wedding.jpg\" alt=\"malay wedding under void deck of HDB\" width=\"650\" height=\"424\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9571\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cultural events are also a good way for your children to become cosmopolitan and informed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Weddings at void deck areas? Check. Chinese Dragon Dance? Yup. <em>Karung guni<\/em> uncle and auntie yelling down the streets? For sure.<\/p>\n<p>HDB estates are also more engaged in grass roots activities, community centre activities for children, etc: Weddings at void decks, Chinese dragon dance, and\u00a0<em>karung gunis<\/em> are some notable flavours that spice up HDB neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing some of these insider information may be helpful when your kids interact with locals in their academic journey and future careers.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Social access<\/h3>\n<p>Not only that, but HDB estates are also more socially accessible and affordable. More HDB flats are near heartlanmalls and public transportation. <span class=\"s1\">This makes it easier for your kids to go to school on their own, especially if you can&#8217;t commit to dropping off or picking them up every day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20791\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20791\" style=\"width: 652px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20791\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ura-condo-rule-changes.png\" alt=\"condo vs hdb living: how it affects children\" width=\"652\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ura-condo-rule-changes.png 600w, https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ura-condo-rule-changes-440x294.png 440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 652px) 100vw, 652px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20791\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Compared to HDBs, condos are generally located in less accessible areas (moreso for upscale condos)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Upscale condos are typically <span class=\"s1\">located in secluded areas because m<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ost developers assume its residents can afford private transport. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, being picked up at a certain time makes it harder for kids to play with their friends after school. No hanging out at play grounds eating $1 ice cream or sharing a Ramly burger at a Pasar Malam. If they do arrange to get home by themselves, it&#8217;ll be quite a walking distance to get home.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Making friends and learning people skills<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Although vacant facilities at condos are beneficial for its usability (See point 2), it&#8217;s not as good at nurturing friendships.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18655\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18655\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-18655\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/condo-sports-facilities-singapore-dleedon-basketball-court.jpg\" alt=\"Condo sports facilities Singapore D'Leedon basketball court\" width=\"650\" height=\"336\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Living in HDB estates, children have a wider range of friends to play with.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As more of HDB\u2019s shared spaces like open void decks and play grounds are often occupied, kids can easily meet and befriend each other. It&#8217;s also easier to find childcare centres downstairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When they\u2019re exposed to different kinds of people and traditions, they develop key social skills. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">It will teach them how to be understanding of different cultural and religious practices, and that happens to be useful in situations like National Service!<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7351\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7351\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7351 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/primary-school-kids-5.jpg\" alt=\"condo vs hdb living: how it affects your child\" width=\"650\" height=\"383\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7351\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">HDB estates often give your children a wider circle of friends.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This is not to say that all condos aren\u2019t community-oriented; it&#8217;s just harder to find one with an active management council, that organises family activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">5. Ability to raise pets<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">But being exposed to other local kids isn&#8217;t the only way for your child to learn good skills. Having pets can also teach them how to care for and be compassionate to another living being.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And what better place to keep them than in condos?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22868\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22868\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22868 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Pets.jpg\" alt=\"People leading a big husky toward a puppy husky\" width=\"650\" height=\"407\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22868\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pet-keeping is made easier at condos than HDBs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pet-keeping rules set by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) for condos and HDBs are different; it&#8217;s more lax for condos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There&#8217;s no particular &#8216;no cats&#8217; policy, unlike with HDBs. And due to floor size and shared spaces, condo residents can also own more than one dog at a time. The pets must be on AVA&#8217;s approved list, though, so do check before adopting one right away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Several studies actually show that pet-keeping positively impacts a child&#8217;s development. This includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Better health<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Being physically active<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Fewer behavior problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Better communication skills<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"> Although there are limits on the places you can bring your pet in a condo, it&#8217;s still your best bet for keeping one. Besides, they&#8217;re great at training children to practice compassion and kindness on others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Is it better to raise children in a condo or HDB?
