Though in the past three years, I can say that (anecdotally) the number has been increasing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, you might be scoffing because you think cycling is for people who can&#8217;t afford a car, and that\u2019s true to a certain extent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the following is also true: while cycling to work can actually allow to both <\/span><b>SAVE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on property, it can also allow you to <\/span><b>SPLURGE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on property.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So whether or not you\u2019re struggling to finance your not-exactly-central BTO, or you\u2019re eyeing a condo for your own stay, you should definitely CONSIDER this.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to save on property: buy homes further away from the MRT<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30340\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/300m-clementi-MRT-station.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1070\" height=\"639\"><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Distance from MRT<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>On Bike (10-25 km\/h)<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>On foot (5km\/h)<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>300m<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>&lt;1.8 minutes<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>3-4 minutes<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>500m<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>&lt;3 minutes<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>5-6 minutes<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>1000m<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>&lt;6 minutes<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>12 minutes<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singaporeans are very preoccupied with having their home within 500m (walking distance) of an MRT, so obviously properties close to MRT stations would be less affordable.\u00a0 That said, on a bicycle riding at least 10km\/h you can cover 500m, 700m or even 1000m in far less time. (For reference, walking speed is around 5 km\/h)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immediately, this turns a 15 minute walk, into a 7 minute cycle. Less, if you use PCNs or the roads which will allow you to ride up to 25 km\/h.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/l2ZE1qT7twjY6ULL2\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/bicycle-cycling-bicycles-l2ZE1qT7twjY6ULL2\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re riding a foldable bike, you could bring it onto the train. Or you could lock your regular bike to the MRT station.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more dedicated cyclists who intend to cycle to their workplace, proximity to an MRT station is even less important.\u00a0 Conversely, we\u2019d look out for the following instead:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Park Connectors (Island Wide)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rail Corridor (Woodlands-Bukit Panjang-Holland-Queenstown-Tanjong Pagar)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Future North-South Corridor (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yishun, Ang Mo Kio, Woodlands and Sembawang)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How to splurge on property: Bike to work, don\u2019t buy a car<\/b><b><\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/M5KGZjDAwe26Q\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/car-satisfying-complete-M5KGZjDAwe26Q\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Unless you&#8217;ve got rich parents or are wildly successful, buying a car will be a major obstacle in affording your own home\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singaporeans are obsessed with cars. <\/span><b>OBSESSED<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We pay six-figure amount to a metal machine that makes us pay even through through insurance, road tax, parking, ERP, servicing, maintenance, etc. All these, added up over 10 years, could potentially be as much as $160,000.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not a small amount for the average Singaporean, especially someone in their twenties or thirties looking to buy their first property.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, we\u2019ve always maintained that buying a good property (an asset) is usually far better than buying a car (a liability).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if instead of buying a car, you rode a bicycle and put this $160,000 into your home instead?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could afford a super nice reno (approx $30k-50k), a larger property, something more central and closer to central Singapore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>A note about public transport: <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, you could have saved the money if you took public transport, but then you\u2019ll be reliant on bus and train timings. The beauty about a bicycle is that you never need to stick to schedules \u2013 you make your own timetables. It\u2019s private transportation without huge costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Speaking of which, some of new condos are really, really, attractive for cycling to work\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30341\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30341\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30341\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Parc-Clematis.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"650\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30341\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Parc Clematis is really near the Ulu Pandan Park Connector, making it a great condo to live in if you intend to live the bike life<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally, a bicycle has always as seen as a poor man\u2019s vehicle in Singapore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a money-saving device with plenty of health benefits, I\u2019ll make the argument that the bicycle could be a potential tool for a new class of affluent early adopters in Singapore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In fact, several new launches are extremely supportive of the lifestyle. It\u2019s true, cycling in Singapore is hot, you will perspire a lot and not everyone is physically fit, especially those with poor cardio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But here\u2019s the thing: people already paying for $100 bucks per month at a gym to pespire and get physically fit and have good cardio. Here\u2019s something you could do for FREE and also double up as a fitness regime.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with almost everything, sometimes thinking outside the box allows you to benefit tremendously.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being able to comfortably afford your home?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d say there are few benefits greater than that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not a lot of Singaporeans cycle to work, I can say that for sure.
