Smart technologies in homes en<\/span>able families to generate and conserve <\/span>energy, with some ev<\/span>en making money from selling the excess.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Thousands of smart homes that have sprouted all over J<\/span>apan look just like those <\/span>Singaporeans are used to, with one added feature \u2013 a sea of rooftop solar panels. <\/span><\/p>\n

Housewife Mayumi Hareguchi, 38, lives with her husband and six-year-old son in <\/span>one such dwelling<\/span> in Shioashiya, Japan\u2019s Hyogo Prefecture. <\/span><\/p>\n

Not only does the family save 20,000 yen (S$230) in average monthly power bills, they also make about 15,000 yen ($172) from selling excess energy generated every month. <\/span><\/p>\n

Their<\/span> four-bedroom, 130 s<\/span>quare <\/span>m<\/span>etre<\/span> abode<\/span> is packed with smart technologies, including a lithium-ion battery that stores solar power<\/span> <\/span>and a fuel cell in the backyard that generates electricity and heat for immediate consumption. <\/span><\/p>\n

It<\/span> also has a smart home energy management system that tracks the family\u2019s energy generation and consumption. <\/span>Mayumi-san<\/span> can check the energy usage of each room and appliance on her TV set or smartphone, turn them on or off, and set the home\u2019s indoor temperature.<\/span><\/p>\n

These technologies<\/span> <\/span>did not come at<\/span> an added price. <\/span>The family <\/span>paid 55 million yen<\/span> (S$632,231)<\/span> for their home, about the average cost of a property of that size<\/span> in the area<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The house \u2013 <\/span>part of a residential project of 400 h<\/span>omes and an 83-unit condominium \u2013 <\/span>was developed by PanaHome Corporation, the housing arm of Japanese electronics giant Panasonic. <\/span><\/p>\n
