Urban cities around the world are coming up with solutions to keep housing affordable so workers\u00a0continue to stay, the Financial Times reported.<\/p>\n

This is an uphill battle as prices continue to climb. In Beijing for instance, the average cost of\u00a0housing in a year is more than the average annual salary, the Global Cities Business Alliance\u00a0(GCBA) found.<\/p>\n

Costs have driven workers away from the city centre in Mexico, where people spend two hours\u00a0commuting on the average. GCBA believes that this time and money could be used more efficiently.<\/p>\n

To tackle this phenomenon, researchers at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University are\u00a0working on 3D printing the structural elements of apartments. The plan is to \u201cprint\u201d these blocks\u00a0from a concrete-based material, before putting them together like Lego bricks.<\/p>\n

This is an unusual proposition. \u201cIn the cities we\u2019re talking about, it\u2019s more about trying to get closer\u00a0to an equilibrium and a more balanced supply,\u201d said Mr Stockton Williams, executive director at the\u00a0Terwilliger Center for Housing in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n
