{"id":6527,"date":"2016-07-19T03:32:21","date_gmt":"2016-07-18T19:32:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.99.co\/blog\/singapore\/?p=6527"},"modified":"2022-07-01T04:03:07","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T20:03:07","slug":"australia-singapore-largest-brexit-gainers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/australia-singapore-largest-brexit-gainers\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia and Singapore are largest Brexit gainers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p>A recent global report by investment bank Citigroup has named Australia and Singapore as the two\u00a0largest markets set to reap the benefits of United Kingdom&#8217;s exit from the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>The vote on June 23, commonly known as Brexit, has sent markets tumbling and shudders through\u00a0what investors regarded as a safe haven for assets.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6528\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6528\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6528\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/brexit.jpg\" alt=\"Australia and Singapore are the potential gainers from Brexit\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/brexit.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/brexit-380x284.jpg 380w, https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/brexit-940x705.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6528\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Australia and Singapore are the potential gainers from Brexit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Asset managers are expected to move funds out of shaky European and British hubs, into the stable\u00a0strongholds of Australia and Singapore, the bank said in a report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDirect real estate markets have entered a phase of paralysis as the market adjusts post the Brexit\u00a0vote in what is now a challenging market,\u201d the Citi report explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarket collapses reveal the best times to buy (but) the unprecedented nature of this situation\u00a0makes picking the bottom of the recent UK stock negativity difficult,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>The prices of European property stocks, especially those of offices and shopping malls, have\u00a0dropped by four to eight percent following the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Property investors are holding back as they think more businesses will downsize operations in the\u00a0unpredictable market, according to a report by The Australian.<\/p>\n<p>Citi predicts that 30,000 jobs could be lost in the city of London, resulting in a 16 to 20 percent\u00a0drop in office rents.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, yields in Singapore&amp;#39;s office market have tightened by 10 per cent post-Brexit. The bank\u00a0expects that this trend will continue, once more operations in London start to seek stability afield.<\/p>\n<p>Although Australia remains an attractive destination, investors may be discouraged by the\u00a0government&#8217;s recent tightening of criteria for foreign investment, said Citi analyst Philip Cheetham.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA withdrawal by multiple lenders in providing finance for (foreign) investors, new foreign\u00a0application costs, higher financing charges for local investors and the imposition of state-based\u00a0stamp duty charges for foreign buyers \u2026 are some of the headwinds the sector has faced,\u201d Mr\u00a0Cheetham said.<\/p>\n<p>Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/\">The Australian<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent global report by investment bank Citigroup has named Australia and Singapore as the two\u00a0largest markets set to reap the benefits of United Kingdom&#8217;s exit from the European Union.
