Recent surveys by Milieu Insight and Pink Dot have brought to light the pressing housing woes of the LGBTQ+ community in Singapore. Barriers to homeownership emerged as a top concern, especially among LGBTQ+ respondents, with 31% of them highlighting this as their primary issue. But it’s not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about acceptance, understanding, and the basic human right to have a roof over one’s head.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The numbers tell a tale of discrimination and challenges. A staggering 60% of respondents believe that the LGBTQ+ community still faces discrimination in Singapore. Among LGBTQ+ respondents, this perception rises to 80%, compared to 59% of their heterosexual counterparts. Only 11% of those acknowledging discrimination felt that enough has been done to combat it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Gen Z respondents were more likely to agree that LGBTQ+ individuals face harassment or bullying than millennials. There have been accounts of teachers feeling helpless in preventing the bullying of LGBTQ+ youths due to mixed messages from administrators. In some cases, teachers and administrators themselves were responsible for discriminatory treatment.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Training agents to handle LGBTQ+ clients with sensitivity could be one of the first steps in the right direction.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n
