If you’re not already aware of the rising dengue cases, have you been living under a rock? …And did you check it for mosquitoes? But fear not; we’ll get you up to speed. In this article, we’ll take you through the current case numbers, what the National Environment Agency (NEA) is doing <\/span>to tackle this issue, and most importantly, <\/span> dengue prevention tips to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community from this growing health threat.<\/p>\r\n

The buzzing numbers<\/b><\/h2>\r\n

As of February 13, 2025, Singapore is experiencing a significant increase in dengue cases. In the first 6 weeks of the year, the country has reported 599 cases of dengue<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

In the week ending February 8, 2025, 113 cases were reported, marking a 59-case rise from the previous week. There are currently 15 active dengue clusters, with 5 classified as high-risk areas.<\/p>\r\n

The overall count of dengue cases has also been on the rise. In 2024, Singapore reported a total of 13,655 dengue cases, a 37.2% increase from the 9,949 cases in 2023. Between October and December 2024, over 5,600 mosquito breeding sites were identified across the island, marking an increase of approximately 15% compared to the previous quarter.<\/p>\r\n

According to authorities, the Dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV-2) has been the most common strain since September 2023, following periods where DENV-1 and DENV-3 were dominant in 2023. The population\u2019s immunity to all four Dengue virus serotypes remains low, which could be a reason for the rise in number of cases year-on-year. With the ongoing presence of these risk factors, there is a potential for a rise in dengue cases if measures are not taken to address the situation.<\/p>\r\n

Thankfully, only 2 cases of Zika virus have been reported so far, but it would be prudent not to drop any safety measures yet.<\/p>\r\n

What’s causing this dengue frenzy?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n

For one, the Dengue virus serotype 1 (DENV-1), previously less prevalent, has been making a comeback. And, as if that weren’t enough, the warmer months from May to October, when the Aedes mosquito vector thrives, usually witness higher dengue transmission. This is due to the mosquitoes multiplying the Dengue virus faster. It’s like the perfect storm for dengue, and it calls for immediate action.<\/p>\r\n

  • Sudden onset of fever for two to seven days.<\/em><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
  • Severe headache with retro-orbital (behind the eye) pain.<\/em><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
  • Joint and muscle pain.<\/em><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
  • Skin rashes.<\/em><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
  • Nausea and vomiting.<\/em><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
  • Bleeding from the nose or gums.<\/em><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
  • Easy bruising of the skin.<\/em><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n
