After years of anticipation, Hume MRT station<\/a> is finally set to open, bringing improved connectivity to residents in the Upper Bukit Timah<\/a> area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Located along the Downtown Line (DTL), this station is expected to serve over 20,000 people living in the surrounding private homes and condominiums. <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

With its strategic position between Hillview<\/a> and Beauty World MRT stations<\/a>, the new stop will provide easier access to key destinations, reducing travel time and enhancing public transport options.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

        Construction timeline and background<\/b><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

        This may come as a surprise to some, but <\/span>Hume MRT station was actually built years ago. It was completed as an underground shell structure in 2014 but was left unopened. <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

        At the time, there were concerns about ridership and whether the station was necessary. However, after strong lobbying from residents, the government decided to proceed with the station\u2019s fit-out in 2021. For months, little visible work was seen, but gradually, excavation work and flood barriers began appearing, signalling real progress. <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

        Despite the delays, the project has now reached its final stages, and residents are eager for its official opening.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

        Reasons for the delayed opening<\/b><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

        As we mentioned previously, the initial decision to keep Hume MRT station closed was based on concerns over ridership numbers. <\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

        At the time, the surrounding area lacked sufficient development to justify an operational station. However, plans for the Rail Corridor redevelopment and the transformation of the former Bukit Timah Fire Station into a mixed-use development with co-living spaces changed the situation. With these new projects, the need for an operational Hume MRT station be<\/span>came clearer, leading to the station\u2019s completion.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

        Improved connectivity and travel time<\/b><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

        Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat officially announced on January 24 that Hume MRT station would soon be open to the public on February 28<\/a>. The addition of this station will significantly reduce travel time for commuters.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

        Currently, a trip from Hume to Downtown station takes about 45 minutes, but with the new station in operation, this journey will be shortened to just 30 minutes<\/strong>. Similarly, travel to Botanic Gardens, which currently requires a 30-minute bus ride, will be cut down to just 15 minutes by train.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

        Beyond convenience, Hume MRT station will also improve access to several key attractions. The Former Ford Factory, a historical site, and the Rail Corridor, a popular green space for jogging and cycling, will become more easily reachable. This enhancement in accessibility will not only benefit residents but also attract visitors interested in the area\u2019s heritage and nature trails.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
