Where would go? Alexandra? The only amenities there are sporting goods and Swedish meatballs. Orchard Road? The only entertainment there is watching drunk tourists hail cabs. No, the only place to consider is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/livingeast-coast-katong\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">East Coast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and here&#8217;s why:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><b>The Thomson-East Coast Line<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) is a 43 kilometre long line, which should be completed in five stages from 2019 to 2024. This will better connect the East Coast to the rest of the MRT network, via nine stations. These are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanjong Rhu<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katong Park<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marine Parade<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marine Terrace <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siglap<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bayshore<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bedok South<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sungei Bedok<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xilin<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ha, ha, you used to say, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) treats these place like the neglected stepchildren in a Korean drama. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well who&#8217;s laughing now?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The residents here now have easy access to the beach, a huge build-up of malls, too many Din Tai Fung outlets, and rapid access to the North-South line. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The TEL also means the cluster of condos in the Bayshore area will no longer be an isolated enclave. Not only will the condos there be minutes from the beach, they will also have an MRT station right across the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/sale?listing_type=sale&amp;map_bounds=1.26972%2C103.848515%2C1.347634%2C103.971768&amp;page_num=1&amp;page_size=20&amp;query_coords=1.3039947%2C103.8298507&amp;query_ids=sg-mrt-amber%2Csg-mrt-bayshore%2Csg-mrt-bedok-south%2Csg-mrt-katong-park%2Csg-mrt-marine-parade%2Csg-mrt-marine-terrace%2Csg-mrt-siglap%2Csg-mrt-sungei-bedok%2Csg-mrt-tanjong-rhu&amp;query_limit=radius&amp;query_type=subway_station&amp;radius_max=1000&amp;rental_type=unit&amp;show_future_mrts=true&amp;zoom=13\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out the condos for sale along these future MRT stations<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3><b> Revitalisation of Bedok<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8877\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/bedok.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1617\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/bedok.jpg 1617w, https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/bedok-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/bedok-940x628.jpg 940w, https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/bedok-440x294.jpg 440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1617px) 100vw, 1617px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 years ago, if you asked the average Singaporean what Bedok was good for, the answer would have been that presumably the residents also pay taxes. These days, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ura.gov.sg\/uol\/-\/media\/dmp2013\/Planning%20Area%20Brochures\/Brochure_Bedok_1.pdf?la=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bedok is being revitalised<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and many other areas of the East Coast stand to gain from it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The URA&#8217;s plans include the opening of polyclinics, a library, more retail and cholesterol options, and parks and cycling routes (in an attempt to compete with the cholesterol). Along with developments in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/paya-lebar-versus-jurong-will-hottest-business-hub\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paya Lebar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (it&#8217;s becoming a new business hub), and the cluster of malls already around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/tampines-home-buyers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tampines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, East Coast residents will never again have to leave this half of the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think this is an exaggeration by the way, do note that in 2016 one of the biggest sales was a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/business.asiaone.com\/property\/news\/executive-flat-bedok-sells-record-breaking-935000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$935,000 executive flat <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Bedok. And 2016 was a year when the property market had fallen almost 11 percent from the peak in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h3><b> The Paya Lebar business hub is finally coming around<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Paya-Lebar-Master-Plan-2.jpeg\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Paya Lebar is slated to be transformed into a new business hub, with major developments almost completed. Drop by the Paya Lebar MRT station; you can see a giant mall and integrated project being completed, as well as the former SingPost building being converted into Singapore&#8217;s first e-commerce mall.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And from what we understand, the other mall being built will be catered especially to various international brands. It looks like all this could transform Paya Lebar into a massive retail hub. And with the intent to open several office spaces in the area, home buyers might find themselves conveniently living near their workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h3><b> Seafront living and green spaces<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has been the draw of the East Coast since the days when Katong Park overlooked the ocean, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/katong-shopping-centre-potential-gold-mine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katong Shopping Centre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had a tenant that isn&#8217;t a maid agency. The Bayshore area, which may soon see 12,000 new homes, is currently most famous for this; in the condos there you can look straight out at the ships about to dock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those further away from the beach, Bedok reservoir provides extensive park land for picnics and walks. It also links up with the Siglap Park Connector, for crazy expatriates who like walking in the sun. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For home owners who don&#8217;t like their main view to be the back of someone else&#8217;s head, the East Coast area feels almost like a whole different country. Down here you can breathe, and jog for more than three metres without a car horn blaring in your ear. There&#8217;s a reason east coast residents don&#8217;t like moving elsewhere, and this is it. The only real trade-off for them has been the lack of MRT stations, and see point 1 about that.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h3><b> The East Coast is a food paradise<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Katong area was once the favourite locale of Peranakan families, which means it&#8217;s a food paradise. The famous Katong laksa wars were fought here, with many casualties for those on a diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.99.co\/singapore\/insider\/appeal-joo-chiat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stretch along Joo Chiat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is particularly famous for food, and has now also attracted its share of hipster cafes. The famous local steak chain Astons, incidentally, was once a small stall in what&#8217;s now Alibabar (hawker by day, bar by night).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The &#8220;sleaze&#8221; stretch of the East Coast was admittedly in the same area once; it was was formerly centered around the bars in the former Paramount Hotel, and the massage parlours along Joo Chiat. They&#8217;ve since been cleared out, and the area is now family friendly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along the beach, of course, there&#8217;s still the lagoon, and a variety of pet-friendly eateries; there are few places in Singapore where you can bring your dog with you.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, if you&#8217;re trying to pick a family friendly place, it&#8217;s hard to go wrong almost anywhere on the east coast (districts 15 and 16). And given the falling property prices, we&#8217;re betting families looking for their first home will be making a beeline for these areas first.
