Tiong Bahru Estate consists of about 30 blocks of Pre-War privatised walk-up apartments and 35 blocks of Post-War HDB flats.

The Pre-War blocks, built in the 1930s, stand out with the curved corners and wide horizontal streamlined structure known as the Art Deco architectural style that had been all the rage in Europe. At 5-storeys high, these were some of the tallest buildings then. Today, they have become the idyllic relics in our metropolitan city of multi-storeys buildings and glitzy shopping malls. In December 2003, 20 blocks of these flats were awarded conservation status, together with the 2-storey Transitional style shophouses along Tiong Bahru Road and the 1- to 4- storey Art Deco style shophouses along Outram Road, forming the Tiong Bahru Conservation Area.

With the influx of expatriates and yuppies who relish the nostagia, this area has been revitalised with a bubbling vibe of sentimentalism, attracting some quaint and unusual boutiques, art galleries and cafes to set up shop here.
