New lock for the upcoming CNY – igloohome’s Smart Mortise lock review

4 min readby Add as preferred on Google

This has probably happened to you before

Exhausted from the workday, you finally arrive at your doorstep. The only thing standing between you and the comfort of your home is the door.

You open your bag. You check the compartment where you usually put your keys, and realise they’re not there.

Panic starts to build. Did you leave them in the house? Did they drop out of your bag in the office? Did they fall out somewhere on your way home?

If this happens often and you’re convinced you could do with less worry in your life, ighoohome’s Smart Mortise Lock is a good solution to consider for this Chinese New Year!

A better way to access your home with Igloohome

The first way to unlock the mortise is via a bluetooth key on your mobile phone. Using an app like igloohome’s to unlock the main entryway will likely be the most common way you’ll open doors in the future. The only prerequisite is that Bluetooth and location services need to be turned on.

Like how our phones have a fingerprint option as well as a code/pattern to unlock, you can also key in a 7-digit PIN. For added security, you may also choose to enter random false digits before your actual number.

A third way to open the door is via key card. If you have younger children, perhaps it’s your mother-in-law who picks them up from the childcare to send them home in the afternoon. No bigger than an Ez-link charm, why not attach them both to her wallet? With less than perfect eyesight (and forgetfulness that comes with old age), instead of using the keypad, one tap on the smart lock is all she would need to enter. Thereafter the Mortise auto-locks after several seconds, the duration of which you specify. As back-up, the smart lock also comes with a physical key.

Temporary access? Granted

The coolest feature ighoohome’s Mortise offers is the ability to create new keys – in the form of PINs or Bluetooth – to cater to different household needs. How many times were you busy in the office when you received a call from the delivery man and no one is home? With a smart lock, you can generate a one-time pin on the spot, convey it to him and get your parcel stored safely in the house. Although we recommend that you have IP cameras installed to monitor the event.

For those who receive help with cleaning and other household chores, a duration PIN gives access to helpers within serviceable hours. If you rent out property on AirBnB or lease out a room in your house, a duration or permanent PIN both do the job. Tracking when each key is used, the access log forms one of the 3 main tabs in the app. To keep it updated, you’ll need to refresh the log within Bluetooth range of your Smart Mortise Lock.

This premium smart lock from igloohome was made to meet modern needs. Similar previous models, the lock remains offline, meaning that it doesn’t require connection to the internet for it to function (only the app does), making it more reliable and secure.

That said, being offline has its own limitations. Access logs outside of bluetooth keys aren’t updated instantly, and neither do they show all the ins and outs; only ins. Usability wise, while one-time PINs and duration PINs are helpful, perhaps a weekly auto-generated duration PIN pushed out to selected users could offer more convenience. Additionally, taking heed from modern cars, a future possibility of the Smart Mortise Lock could detect the presence of a smart key uniquely identified through the user’s phone without the need to open the app.

If going keyless and managing access to your home or business appeals to you, the igloohome Smart Mortise Lock can be yours for $649.00 (original $849.00). Installation is provided too! Alternatively you may also opt for igloohome’s Smart Keybox retailing at $229.00 (original $279.00). Attaching the box to your gate or drilling it to a wall outside your home to store house keys prevents anyone from losing them. The same types of PINs and logs are also generatable within the igloohome app.
