According to a poll, most Singaporeans support the demolishing of a pre-war bungalow that Mr Lee Kuan Yew had lived in.
A majority of Singaporeans support demolishing the home of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in line with his wishes, a poll by market research firm YouGov showed.
The poll of 1,000 found that 77 per cent felt Lee’s wish to tear down the pre-war bungalow at 38, Oxley Road should be honoured.
Lee, who died on March 23 this year at age 91, had lived in the modestly-furnished bungalow since the 1940s.
He stated in his will that it was his wish that the house be demolished immediately after his death, or until his daughter, Dr Lee Wei Ling decides to moves out.
Respondents who supported this cited reasons such as the importance of honouring his wish and respecting his privacy. Since his death, there have been calls by the public to preserve the property, and to turn it into a museum or heritage site.
On Dec 4, Mr Lee’s children, including Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, said in a joint statement that they hope the state would honour their late father’s wishes regarding the house. Half of the value of the Oxley Road house will be donated to eight charities, the statement added.
