You can help Malaysian workers find temporary housing in SG, here’s how [25 March update]

3 min read

Every day, more than 300,000 Malaysians travel to Singapore to work and back. The ongoing Malaysia lockdown, which at time of update will run at least until 14 April, has created an urgent situation in Singapore, and a sizeable number of Malaysian workers remain without accommodation (i.e. homeless) days after they have arrived. Now, we’re doing our part to help the affected find temporary housing in two ways:

  1. We’re reaching out to all residents in Singapore (including landlords and businesses) who are happy to offer complimentary temporary housing for our displaced Malaysian counterparts during the lockdown
  2. We’re putting together a database of Malaysian workers in Singapore who are urgently seeking temporary housing to tide through the lockdown period with a roof over their heads

99.co is actively matching the two groups of people above. Singapore residents offering temporary accommodation to Malaysians may fill in this form, while those needing a temporary roof over their heads during the lockdown may fill in this form.

Let’s give our neighbours a helping hand

If you can offer spare accommodation until 14 April 2020 and want to help a Malaysian brother/sister find safety in your shelter, you can reach out to us here. In the meantime, we also welcome businesses with spare accommodation to come on board. (We’re delighted that a couple of accommodation partners including MetroResidences have agreed to partner with us, which means that we now have a few rooms ready to house a few our neighbours in need.)

If you are a Malaysian in Singapore needing temporary lodging until 14 April 2020, you can reach out to us here. Aside from individuals, local businesses with Malaysian employees needing temporary housing can also use our initiative to connect with locals in Singapore offering shelter.

If you know any one that fits who we’re looking for, share this page with him or her. Spread the word!

99.co will screen all offers and carefully match those who can offer accommodation with those who need it.

Given the scale of the situation, we’ll need a lot more temporary housing to make a difference. So you have a spare room or even a couch, consider being a part of our initiative in this challenging period.

When signing up, please be mindful not to exceed the occupancy cap of your property:

Type of Residential Property Maximum Occupants
HDB flat (1- or 2-room) 4
HDB flat (3-room or larger) 6
Private property (e.g. condo unit) 6

Encouraging numbers to date… keep it coming!

As of 25 March 2020, 31 homeowners have offered to Malaysian workers during the lockdown. We’ve also received 38 requests from individuals and employers for temporary housing, so we’re running short on supply!

If you’re a Singapore homeowner who can spare a room, please fill in this form! If know someone who might be able to help, pass the news on and share them on social media or messaging groups. A simple act of kindness and friendship can go a long way!
