Urban cities around the world are coming up with solutions to keep housing affordable so workers continue to stay, the Financial Times reported.
This is an uphill battle as prices continue to climb. In Beijing for instance, the average cost of housing in a year is more than the average annual salary, the Global Cities Business Alliance (GCBA) found.
Costs have driven workers away from the city centre in Mexico, where people spend two hours commuting on the average. GCBA believes that this time and money could be used more efficiently.
To tackle this phenomenon, researchers at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University are working on 3D printing the structural elements of apartments. The plan is to “print” these blocks from a concrete-based material, before putting them together like Lego bricks.
This is an unusual proposition. “In the cities we’re talking about, it’s more about trying to get closer to an equilibrium and a more balanced supply,” said Mr Stockton Williams, executive director at the Terwilliger Center for Housing in Washington, DC.
