In a bid to address the housing needs of families awaiting their new flats, the Housing Board (HDB) announced plans last year to double the number of interim rental flats to 4,000 over the next two years. Today, we’re hearing news that progress is underway, particularly in Tanglin Halt.

Interim rental housing supply

Tanglin Halt, a vibrant neighbourhood, is set to become home to about 2,000 vacated flats across 17 blocks, refurbished and designated for temporary housing under the Parenthood Provisional Housing Scheme (PPHS) from the latter half of 2025. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to providing suitable living arrangements for families during the interim period, ensuring inclusive neighbourhoods and support for families in transition.

PPHS Expansion

HDB’s pledge to double the supply of flats under the PPHS from 2,000 units to 4,000 units by 2025 marks a significant step towards meeting the growing demand for interim rental housing. This expansion reflects the government’s proactive approach to address housing needs effectively.

Redevelopment plans

The flats in Tanglin Halt earmarked for interim use under PPHS are part of a larger redevelopment plan. These include Blocks 55, 56, 58-60, 62 Commonwealth Drive, and Blocks 33-38 and 40-44 Tanglin Halt Road. Additionally, another four blocks, Blocks 63-66, are already designated as part of the existing PPHS supply.

The forthcoming redevelopment aims to enhance the living environment and amenities for residents in Tanglin Halt.

Refurbishment works

The 50-year-old flats slated for PPHS will undergo extensive refurbishment to ensure comfortable living conditions for residents. This includes the replacement of fittings and fixtures, electrical and painting works, as well as improvements in common areas. These refurbishment efforts aim to rejuvenate the flats and provide a conducive living environment for families.

Amenities and facilities

In addition to the refurbished flats, amenities such as playgrounds and childcare centres are planned for the area, complementing nearby facilities like the Tanglin Halt market. These amenities are designed to enhance the quality of life for residents and create a thriving community environment.

PPHS eligibility

Eligibility for PPHS flats is determined based on specific criteria, including a monthly household income not exceeding S$7,000, ownership of an uncompleted flat from HDB’s sales exercises, and prioritisation of married couples with at least one child aged 18 and below.

These criteria ensure that the interim rental flats are allocated to families in genuine need of temporary housing support.

Other redevelopment plans for Tanglin Halt

In addition to the interim rental flats, Tanglin Halt is set for further redevelopment plans, with up to 5,500 flats to be built as part of the integrated development. This comprehensive redevelopment aims to connect HDB flats to essential amenities such as shops, a hawker centre, and a market, enhancing the overall living experience for residents in Tanglin Halt.
