Thaipusam 2025 in Singapore (date, procession route, rituals, & more)

Updated: 6 min read

When I was younger, attending Thaipusam was something my family and I always looked forward to. But as I grew older, life got in the way, and we slowly stopped going. Last year, however, everything changed. I finally decided to brave the crowd and join the temple procession, carrying a paal kudam of my own.

My legs felt like they were about to give up on me, but the experience was unforgettable. There was something so profound about witnessing the devotion, the colours, the music, and the spiritual energy firsthand. It shed a whole new light on the festival for me.

This year, I’ll be participating again, and if you’re planning to do the same, here’s everything you need to know about Thaipusam 2025 in Singapore.

What is Thaipusam?

Thaipusam is a Hindu Tamil festival dedicated to Lord Murugan, the deity of youth, power, and virtue. It is a time for devotees to express gratitude, seek blessings, and fulfill vows through acts of devotion. The festival represents self-discipline, asceticism, and mastery over one’s senses. Many devotees prepare for weeks in advance, taking on spiritual commitments such as fasting, meditation, and prayer. Offerings, including milk pots and intricate kavadis, are carried during a long and physically demanding procession, symbolising faith and devotion.

When is Thaipusam 2025?

Thaipusam falls on February 11 2025. However, the sacred procession will begin the night before, at 11:30 PM on February 10, from Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple along Serangoon Road. The Hindu Endowments Board has stated that all devotees must complete their journey and arrive at Sri Thendayuthapani Temple on Tank Road by 11 PM on Thaipusam Day.

Is Thaipusam a public holiday in Singapore?

Unfortunately, Thaipusam is not a public holiday in Singapore. In some other countries, the festival is a national holiday, but here, it remains a major cultural and religious event that takes place on a working day.

Thaipusam rituals and celebrations

The rituals of Thaipusam are deeply symbolic. Many devotees carry a paal kudam, or milk pot, as a representation of cleansing and gratitude. Others take on the physically intense act of carrying a kavadi, a wooden or metal structure that is often pierced onto the body. Preparing to carry a kavadi requires immense dedication – devotees abstain from indulgences, follow a strict vegetarian diet, and focus on spiritual discipline for weeks leading up to the festival.

A significant purification ritual includes head shaving, performed as an act of humility and devotion at the temple before the procession begins. The main event unfolds along a four-kilometre route, stretching from Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple to Sri Thendayuthapani Temple. Thousands of devotees walk this path, accompanied by family members and supporters, carrying their offerings in an atmosphere filled with prayers, music, and unwavering determination.

Tips for Thaipusam devotees

Participating in Thaipusam is both a spiritual and physical commitment. To ensure a smooth experience, keep these tips in mind:

  • Stay hydrated: The journey is long, and our weather can be unpredictable. Carry a water bottle to keep yourself hydrated throughout the procession.
  • Be prepared for the weather: Bring a raincoat or umbrella in case of unexpected showers. If it gets too hot, tissues or a small towel will help wipe off sweat and keep you comfortable.
  • Keep some cash on you: Along the procession route, there are often stalls selling drinks or snacks. Having small amounts of cash on hand can be useful.
  • Bring a reusable bag: If you plan on picking up food or offerings, a foldable bag can help you carry everything conveniently. And when you’re not using it, just neatly fold and tuck it in a pocket or your handbag.
  • Take breaks when needed: The procession requires stamina, so listen to your body. If you feel tired, step aside, take a rest, and continue when you’re ready.
  • Respect the atmosphere: Smoking and drinking are strictly prohibited along the route. Maintain a sense of reverence for the festival and the people participating.
  • Clean up after yourself: Whether you bring snacks, tissues, or any other items, make sure to dispose of them properly and leave the surroundings clean for others.
