Getting a new roommate always presents an iffy set of circumstances. You could potentially end up with a new best friend, or you might just end up in a nightmarish situation where you’re basically stuck with someone you don’t like, who doesn’t like you, and whose sole purpose in life seems to be pushing your buttons.
Think we’re exaggerating? Think again. According to 7 renters in Singapore, here are the worst roommates that they’ve ever dealt with:
The one who didn’t bother with the bathroom:
“After looking around for a few months, I still couldn’t find a female roommate, and since I have three brothers, I thought living with a guy wouldn’t be that bad. Big mistake. He came home drunk one night and peed everywhere.”
Rachel, 29
The buy one, get one free:
“I thought I was signing up to live with this guy, but then his girlfriend started hanging around all the time, and she eventually moved in. She ate my food, hogged the toilet, and was generally extremely unpleasant to live with. Thank god they broke up after a month – although she did steal my frozen dinners from the fridge before moving out.”
Jacob, 28
The slob:
“I’m by no means a neat freak, but my ex-roommate really takes the cake when it comes to cleanliness and hygiene. She’d have these massive cookouts with her friends and use every single plate and pot in the apartment, then leave it to stew in the sink for days on end. She let her wet clothes sit in the washing machine for, like, 5 days and then got mad when I put them in the dryer for her.”
Maria, 32
“I realised my Harry Potter DVDs were missing, and asked my ex-roommate if he had seen them. He calmly told me that he threw them out weeks ago, because they were “blasphemous”.”
Joseph, 28
The desperate one:
“This ex-roommate of mine seemed 100% normal, until the first time I had a female friend over. He completely transformed from a cool, laidback guy into a super smarmy dude, and tried to make the moves on her. The next day, I actually caught him in the act of using my Facebook account (which was open on my laptop) to stalk her and gather intel on her.”
Miguel, 31
The one with multiple boyfriends:
This is more of a bizarre roommate story than a worst roommate one – but my ex-roommate was dating something like 4 guys at once, and none of them knew about each other. I have no idea how she managed to pull it off – all I know was that it was exhausting getting their names straight and hearing each of them blabber on about how they were really excited to spend time with such an “awesome” girl better… of course, didn’t help that I was single AF at that time.”
Jazleen, 29
The one on the diet:
“My ex-roommate announced that she was going on a juice cleanse – and I personally don’t think these cleanses make sense, but whatever, it’s her life, right? Then she decided to impose a ban on food in the house after 8pm so that she wouldn’t get hungry. That’s right. Whilst she was doing her cleanse, none of us could cook, or get takeout, or have any sort of food after 8pm. I sometimes think she was Hitler, reincarnated.”
Sophia, 26
