Feeling frustrated over a moth infestation? In this article, we will explain what moths are, the damage they can cause, and some tips on how to get rid of them.
What are moths and what damage can they cause?
Moths are insects that are closely related to butterflies. While they do not bite or sting, they are capable of causing significant damage. If you notice chewed holes in clothes, fabrics or carpets, it is highly likely that a moth infestation has occurred.
Note that moths do not eat fabric. Rather, it is their larvae that leave all the damage, as they rely on natural fibres like linen and wool for sustenance.

Tips on getting rid of moths:
#1 Mothballs
Mothballs are small, pungent balls of chemical pesticide and deodorant. Often used when storing clothing and fabrics, it helps to protect against damage from moth larvae. Keep a couple of them in an airtight container together with your clothes and fabrics. The fumes released by mothballs (a toxic insecticide called Naphthalene) effectively kill moths and its larvae.

#2 Pheromone Traps
Pheromone is a hormone emitted by female moths to attract a mate. Since male moths are drawn to this hormone, moth traps are usually coated in pheromone and a sticky substance. The moths are drawn to the trap and get stuck because of the sticky substance.

#3 Lavender
If you prefer a natural alternative, lavender is a great solution as well. As it is a natural moth repellent, simply add some lavender flowers to a small sachet bag and hang them in moth-prone areas. Another option is to soak a cotton ball in lavender oil and place it in the closet to repel the insect.

#4 Essential oil spray
Mix essential oil with water and place the mixture into a spray bottle. Use it to repel moths by spraying the mixture over fabric, clothes, and areas prone to moths. There are many essential oil scents which are anti-moth. They include Peppermint, Eucalyptus, and Indian Lilac.

#5 Clean the house thoroughly
If you have just sighted some moths or holes in fabrics, be sure to check every cupboard and possible place for moth larvae. Once found, empty the cupboards and start vacuuming the inside. This includes carpets as well.
Following that, wipe down the inside of the cupboard using detergent or vinegar, and dry it after using a clean cloth. Be sure to pay careful attention to the nooks and corners too.

#6 Wash moth-infested items
After cleaning the closet, do not put the clothes back immediately. Instead, you should wash all the clothes that have been attacked by moth larvae. Put the clothes in a bucket of hot detergent water and leave it to soak for one to two hours. Then, use a brush to scrub the clothes, rinsing them before drying.

#7 Store items correctly
As moths and its larvae are not able to penetrate into hard material, the best way to store wool or silk clothing is by sealing it in a plastic bag or box. Make sure you store them properly so that moths are not able to nest there. You could also add a couple of mothballs before sealing the box as an additional layer of protection.

#8 Store food properly
Other than clothes moths, there are moths which attack food. Therefore, store all food in an air-tight container so that moths can’t get into them. Ensure that the trash is regularly cleared as well.
