Located just 45 kilometres south-east of Singapore, Bintan is heating up, with two new properties and another 10 on the way.
With better infrastructure that halved travel time between land designated for tourism development and Bintan’s capital Tanjung Pinang, interest and investment are returning to the once-sleepy Singaporean weekend jaunt.
The 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, outbreaks of malaria and mixed reviews of the island’s resorts had wiped out investor and visitor interest after an influx of construction in the mid- to late-1990s.
Less than half of Bintan Resorts’ 17,500ha – an area 35 times the size of Sentosa that was set aside for tourism development – has been utilised.
The construction of an international airport, set to open in 2017, is expected connect Bintan with greater numbers of Indonesian and international tourists. Most visitors currently arrive by ferry via Singapore’s Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.
Mr Asad Shiraz, spokesman for Bintan Resorts, noted that Bali receives more Indonesian than foreign visitors, and hopes the island will follow in the same route.
Two new developments offer a glimpse of the island’s revival. Tucked among mangrove forests is Treasure Bay Bintan, a new 388ha resort city where luxury meets adventure and family fun. The Canopi, a 41-suite resort that opened in September, offers guests a chance to go “glamping” – camping without hassle and sleeping bags.
