It’s no surprise that this hip little coffee spot gets packed out, as the place has a buzzing vibe, great tunes including some hip hop beats, and delicious specialty coffee made with sustainably produced fair trade and direct trade beans. They also have a tasty brunch menu available Friday to Sunday, delicious cakes and boutique beers on offer on Fridays and Saturdays.

BRAWNS & BRAINS

Hidden away in Geylang’s old badminton hall, Brawns & Brains eschews the snobbery of so many specialty coffee shops and instead offers a warm and welcoming vibe, great unpretentious coffee made with organic single origin beans, and tasty pastries and tarts in their tiny space. The cafe can only seat about 15 people at a time, so take-away is often the best option.

CHYE SENG HUAT HARDWARE

Chye Seng Huat means ‘to flourish again’, and that’s exactly what will happen to you after you get your mitts on a cup of Papa Palheta specialty coffee. This Art Deco shophouse is actually the headquarters of Papa Palheta, and it features a roastery, coffee shop with a beautiful bar, all-day menu, wall of coffee accessories and gadgets, and the C-Platform coffee school.

COMMON MAN COFFEE ROASTERS

Offering house roasted coffee from the guys at Five Senses and 40 Hands, Common Man Coffee Roasters is anything but common. The coffee is simply superb, the food is great and the lack of Wi-Fi means you get some straight up human interaction. The place gets super busy on the weekends, which adds to the great vibe. For more chilled environs head here off peak hours.

JEWEL COFFEE

Popular among the CBD crowd, Jewel Coffee roasts their own beans and offer a different roast every day featuring single origin beans from around the world. All coffees are double shots, which is great for those days that you need an extra boost, and they also offer a diverse menu of breakfast and lunch fare. JIMMY MONKEY

Buona Vista is slightly sparse when it comes to good coffee spots, so Jimmy Monkey is bright light for java junkies in the neighbourhood. This ‘Third Wave coffee’ spot serves aromatic espressos prepared on their SlayerTM Espresso machine and made with house roasted seasonal raw green beans sourced globally. You can also grab tasty bites to go with your coffee in the trendy industrial chic lounge.

LOYSEL’S TOY

Loysel’s Toy is located amongst lush greenery next to a river, and the huge al fresco seating area offers a relaxed vibe. But the real star of the show here is the excellent Papa Palheta coffee served iced, hot, with milk or however you like it. This is a great place to chill out with a cup of joe and a good book on a Sunday.

PENNY UNIVERSITY

If you’re in the east and craving a coffee, Penny University is a good stop. The space is cozy and cute with mismatched tables and chairs, and the baristas make fine coffee drinks done with care. Foodwise you can expect the usual breakfast suspects like French toast and eggs benny, and there is also a pastry counter with sweet treats like cakes and squares.

STRANGERS REUNION

When a two-time Singapore National Barista Champion like Ryan Kieran Tan co-founds a coffee shop, you know you’re going to be getting some premium brews. Strangers Reunion offers the usual assortment of espressos, lattes and cappuccios along with delicious cafe fare like buttermilk waffles, baguette sandwiches, salads, croissants and cupcakes. They also do a fab weekend brunch.

TOBY’S ESTATE

Toby Smith honed his coffee making skills in Brazil and Guatemala before returning to Australia to start up Toby’s Estate, the backbone of specialty coffee in Australia. His Singapore location can be found in Robertson Quay overlooking the waters of the Singapore River, and the relaxed ambiance, amazing coffee, great eats and free Wi-Fi make this a perennial favorite among java junkies in the city.

WHALE & CLOUD

To get to Whale & Cloud cafe, follow a small alleyway to the back of a shophouse and knock on the locked door. You then enter a secret garden with red brick walls decorated in toy bear figurines, vintage Cathay cinema chairs and a long table laden with baked goods, chocolates, paper cups and steaming pots of coffee made with Omotesando Koffee beans.
