7 feng shui tips your house needs

9 min read

If you believe in Feng Shui, you know how important it is when buying a house. Even if you are selling your house, knowing what Feng Shui in your unit will help you market it better to prospective buyers. We have some Feng Shui tips for you to consider.

For the uninitiated, Feng Shui is the spatial arrangement and orientation of your home so that there is an optimal flow of positive energy (also known as ‘qi’) in your house. This will help you in various aspects of your life, such as wealth, health, career, love, relationships and more.

The importance of natural light in Feng Shui

Natural light plays a pivotal role in Feng Shui. A well-lit home invites positive energy and creates a sense of warmth and well-being. Large windows, skylights, and open spaces that allow sunlight to permeate can significantly enhance the ‘qi’ flow in your home. Sunlight not only brightens up spaces but also helps purify the air, promoting health, and uplifting the mood.

When selecting a property, ensure that it receives ample natural light. If your home lacks this, consider using mirrors strategically to reflect light or investing in good-quality artificial lighting that mimics natural light. Remember, a bright home is a happy and prosperous home in Feng Shui.

So, how do you spot Feng Shui? Here are 7 Feng Shui tips considered Feng Shui on a property.

Feng Shui tip #1: Having an ideal kitchen layout

The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your house as it is the main place where you prepare food to feed the whole family. Hence, Feng Shui in the kitchen would positively affect your family’s health and wealth.

One sign of Feng Shui is when the stove is not directly opposite the sink. Feng Shui regards the stove as a fire element and the sink as a water element. Hence, placing them facing each other will conflict and cause quarrels and tension between family members.

The position of the kitchen in the house is also an important factor for Feng Shui. A layout would have the kitchen in the south or southwest corners of the house based on the ba gua (energy map). Feng Shui relies on the ba gua which divides the house into nine sectors, each relating to a certain aspect of your life, like wealth and prosperity, love, health and so on.

The kitchen should also not be at the centre of the house as it symbolises “fire attacking the heart”. The fire represents the stove in the house while the heart refers to the centre of the house. This might cause bad luck and health issues.

Feng Shui tip #2: The main door is not facing the kitchen

The main door of a house is important in determining good or Feng Shui, as it is where the ‘qi’ enters. It needs to be in the correct location and facing the proper direction.

Feng Shui avoids having the main door face the kitchen.

A rule of thumb is that the kitchen door or stove cannot form a straight line with the front door. The “fire” energy of the kitchen will clash with the ‘qi’ entering the house. Some of the negative effects of having such an arrangement are health problems, financial problems, disharmony or even freak accidents.

Feng Shui tip #3: The front door is not facing the lift and staircase

If your front door is not facing the lift and staircase, it is a good sign. Some people compare the opening and closing of the lift door to a tiger opening its mouth and getting ready for its next meal. If your front door faces the lift, it might cause disharmony, fights, and accidents in the family.

Although this is not a common belief shared by all Feng Shui masters, there is also a practical reason. Facing the lift means no privacy for your front door.

Avoid having the front door facing the staircase. Many people believe that having the front door face a flight of steps will cause the energy to flow constantly out of your house and move downwards. This shows financial loss, as it’s easier for your wealth to “roll” down the stairs.

Feng Shui tip #4: Position bathrooms properly.

Water flows in and out of bathrooms. In Feng Shui, the element of “water” is associated with wealth. So, if you position your bathroom wrongly, it signifies that you are flushing your wealth down the drain.

One thing to avoid is having the bathroom door directly opposite the front door. Avoid having the front door and bathroom door facing each other to prevent ‘qi’ from being flushed away.

Another sign of Feng Shui is that you should position the toilet at the perimeter of the unit and have it share an “external wall” of the unit.

All the toilets in the bathrooms of enchanté are placed against an external wall, as you can see in this unit layout. Although the common bathroom, Bath 2, is near the front door, the developer has ensured that the bathroom’s entrance is not directly opposite the main entrance.

Feng Shui tip #5: Doors are not facing neighbour directly

If you see houses where the front doors are not facing each other, it is a sign of Feng Shui. If your main entrance is directly facing your neighbour, there will be an exchange of energy between both units, resulting in more conflicts and arguments.

Besides Feng Shui, it also makes sense not to have your front door facing your neighbour’s unit, as it would mean less privacy.

However, as residential units are compact these days, this might be hard to avoid. What you can do is hang a Ba Gua mirror on top of your door to mitigate the negative effects.

Feng Shui #6: The house is facing an open space

If your house has open and unblocked views, it is great for Feng Shui, as it symbolises the red phoenix, one of the four guardians of Feng Shui.

The red phoenix stands for inspiration and openness to new ideas and opportunities. Hence, having unblocked views and open spaces would help to facilitate a smooth flow of energy with no conflict. If your unit faces a tall building or a hill, this might obstruct the flow of energy.

Condos and HDBs built around parks and nature reserves have stacks facing unblocked views and open spaces. An example is Clover by the Park which has one block facing Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park. Another project that is also facing the park is Bishan Park Condo.

Similarly, other parks with several condos around them are Dairy Farm Nature Park, Bedok Reservoir Park and Jurong Lake Gardens.

Feng Shui tip #7: House is not near an expressway or major road

Most buyers would want to avoid getting a house near an expressway or a major road because of the traffic noise and dust. But another factor for not purchasing such a home is Feng Shui.

Kallang Paya Lebar Expressway

In Feng Shui, practitioners compare the flow of traffic to the flow of the river and believe that roads bring energy to your home. Hence, a slow-moving and meandering river is more auspicious than a straight and fast-moving river. That is why houses on quieter roads or smaller lanes will have more positive energy than those on busier roads.

The role of plants in enhancing Feng Shui

Plants are living, breathing organisms that embody the wood element in Feng Shui. Incorporating greenery into your home can balance the five elements and promote a harmonious environment. Plants like the lucky bamboo, peace lily, and money plant are popular Feng Shui choices known to attract prosperity, luck, and positive energy.

They act as natural air purifiers, removing toxins and releasing oxygen, contributing to a healthier living space. When placing plants, ensure they are in health, as wilted or dead plants can attract negative energy. Regularly tending to and caring for your plants symbolizes nurturing your own growth and well-being.

We hope we have given you a better idea of how to spot Feng Shui in a house. Whether you are purchasing or selling a house, the layout, direction of the doors and where the unit is facing matters.
