Two new MRT lines proposed: Seletar and Tengah lines to serve over 400,000 households

Updated: 7 min read

Our rail network is set to expand once again, with two new proposed lines –  the Seletar Line and the Tengah Line – expected to serve over 400,000 households. These additions aim to improve connectivity for commuters in both the northern and western regions, reducing travel times and providing seamless access to key areas across the island. With ongoing feasibility studies, authorities are carefully evaluating the best way to integrate these new routes into the existing MRT system.

Two proposed new rail lines (Seletar Line and Tengah Line)

The Seletar Line is expected to connect northern, central, and southern areas, serving commuters in Woodlands, Sembawang, Sengkang West, Serangoon North, Whampoa, Kallang, and the Greater Southern Waterfront. Meanwhile, the Tengah Line will enhance transport links in the west and northwest, covering areas like Tengah, Bukit Batok, Queensway, and Bukit Merah.

A key consideration is the potential integration of these two lines at the Greater Southern Waterfront. If merged, this could provide seamless connectivity between northern, central, and western Singapore. However, these proposals are still under feasibility studies, so further details will emerge as planning progresses.

S$1 billion investment to enhance rail reliability

Maintaining Singapore’s extensive rail system requires substantial investment, especially as both ageing and newly built lines need regular upkeep. To address this, the government has allocated S$1 billion over the next five years.

This funding will go toward several key improvements:

  • Implementing advanced condition monitoring systems to detect potential faults early and carry out targeted maintenance.
  • Deploying new rail maintenance technologies to enhance efficiency and prolong infrastructure lifespan.
  • Investing in training and upskilling programs for rail workers to ensure that maintenance operations meet the highest standards.

Updates on ongoing rail projects

West Coast Extension (Jurong Region Line to Circle Line)

A major rail extension is also in the works – the West Coast Extension. This will link the Jurong Region Line (JRL) to the Circle Line (CCL), improving transport access for those in the western region. The project will be developed in two phases:

  • Phase 1 (late 2030s): The JRL will be extended from Pandan Reservoir to West Coast station, connecting it to the Cross Island Line (CRL).
  • Phase 2 (early 2040s): The extension will continue from West Coast station to Kent Ridge station, integrating with the CCL.

Once completed, this project is expected to shorten travel times by up to 20 minutes for western commuters heading to the city. Moreover, it will create alternative routes, improving the overall resilience of the MRT network.

The upcoming years will see multiple new stations and lines being opened. Here’s what to expect:

Rejuvenation of older MRT stations

The North-South Line (NSL) and East-West Line (EWL) will undergo significant long-term upgrades. The first station selected for this rejuvenation effort is Yishun MRT station, where authorities are exploring the best ways to upgrade the station.

Proposed enhancements include platform extensions to reduce peak-hour congestion, as well as the installation of additional escalators, lifts, and access points to improve commuter flow. Furthermore, surrounding transport facilities such as bus stops, taxi stands, and covered linkways are expected to be upgraded to provide a more seamless travel experience.

These improvements will ensure that older MRT stations remain efficient and accessible for years to come.

Upgrades at future interchange stations

Several MRT stations that will serve as future interchange points for new MRT lines are set to receive infrastructure improvements. The upgrades will focus on enhancing passenger flow and accessibility at key stations:

With these enhancements, commuters can expect a smoother and more efficient travel experience across the expanding rail network.

A more connected future

The proposed Seletar Line and Tengah Line, combined with ongoing investments in rail maintenance and station enhancements, reflect Singapore’s commitment to improving public transport. As these projects progress, they will provide better connectivity for hundreds of thousands of residents, making commuting more efficient and convenient for everyone.
