West Coast

The West Coast was created out of reclaimed land in the 1970s. Despite both being created out of reclaimed land, the East became a recreational area while the West was filled with industries. However, if you travel from one end of the West Coast to the other, you will sense that there is an invisible line that divides the district into two. While the western side of the West Coast is largely industrial, the eastern side is filled with schools, residential areas, and greenery. This part of the West Coast area is quite ideal for family living or any kind of lifestyle. People who love a peaceful environment will appreciate the quiet ambience this neighbourhood can offer. Then again, with the western part crammed and busy 24/7, the West Coast is one of stark and almost flabbergasting contrast.

Summary

Like the East Coast, the West Coast was created out of reclaimed land in the late 1970s, an equal-opportunity land reclamation exercise that preserved our island's symmetry. To ensure fairness in land distribution, both the east and the west of Singapore were to get more land. After the reclamation, however, the two coasts developed in completely different ways. The East became a recreational hotspot. Whereas, the West literally became hot with all the plastic and food manufacturing. In the 80s and early 90s, the West Coast Park was already in existence but was a relatively desolate area. It was then redeveloped in the late 90s, in hopes that it would be as vibrant as the East. Today, the West Coast is way livelier but still relatively quiet and very peaceful.

Stay - West Coast

The neighbourhood has a large residential area comprising every type of property you can think of. There is a large HDB estate situated beside a string of condominiums and landed property. These condominiums provide a nice view of the port and the sea and are cheaper compared to condominiums in the east and central of Singapore. Homebuyers looking for condominiums can check out Botannia, Parc Riviera, and Twin VEW condominiums. Other developments you might want to consider include The Parc condo, Westbay condominium, and Westcove.

Eats and Drinks - West Coast

If you are a hawker fare lover, we at 99.co recommend you don't miss out on the Ayer Rajah Food Centre. This hawker centre in the West Coast is one of the first few to have stalls receiving the Singapore Top Heritage Food award given out by the International Business Federation (IBF). The Ayer Rajah Food Centre has some of Singapore’s best Indian-Muslim food, including Indian rojak and mee goreng

N M Abdhul Rahim Mee Goreng

If you see plates of bright red noodles on the tables at the centre, it is most definitely the Mee Goreng from N. M. Abdhul Rahim. Having been around for more than 35 years, this stall seems to have worked its way to the local palates. Though cooked only with simple ingredients (such as peas, eggs, and cucumbers) it is packed with flavour. Their secret sambal recipe adds a depth of spicy savoriness, while the use of a cast-iron wok gives a smoky undertone that nicely wraps up the dish.

Adhus Salam Rojak

Another gem is Adhus Salam Rojak which has been consistently coined as one of Singapore’s best Indian Rojak. A must-try is their fresh and crisp coconut fritters which are made of freshly grated coconut. Other ingredients in the rojak include vadai (crispy prawn fritters), fried eggs, and tofu, all of which go well with the sauce. The sauce is a little spicier than the usual which makes it a plus for those who appreciate a little kick.

In times of rainy days, kambing soup is the best one to pick, and no stall does it better than A Rashid Khan. Inside this spicy broth of mutton soup are chunks of mutton, garnished with coriander and leek. The soup also comes with a plate of sliced French loaf so you will surely go home full and satisfied.

Tokyo BBQ Stingray

It is not all Indian cuisine at Ayer Rajah Food Centre. There is also the well-known Tokyo BBQ Stingray. Completely unrelated to the Japanese capital, the BBQ Stingray here may be thicker than usual, but it is no less juicy or flavourful. The sides are nicely charred and the flesh, which has a good coating of the sambal paste, glides off the cartilage smoothly. Together with the chinchalok and chilli achar, the stingray delivers a zesty savoriness all at once.
