So you’ve just moved into your new rental unit, and you want to spruce up the space, and make it more livable.
Obviously, you can’t remove or build partitions, replace any doors or walls, or hammer anything into the walls (not unless you want to have an irate landlord breathing down your neck).
Read on to find out how you can work around this, and what you can do to transform your space!
#1: Add artwork

Who says artwork is a complete no-no when you’re renting? It’s perfectly fine to hang art up – just make sure you use Command strips that don’t leave any residue.
Where can you purchase affordable art pieces? We like Society6, which is an online store that sells art prints, canvas prints and posters from independent artists from across the globe. Click here to shop the LILY POND LANE Art Print featured above.
#2: Get a throw for your couch
If your landlord’s couch is bland and boring, but you’re not keen on forking out $500 to pay for a new couch, here’s a quick fix…
Buy a throw that you like, and use it to inject some personality into your couch!

#3: Get a hammock
A hammock is such a fun piece of furniture, and it can take your rental apartment from blah to amazing in two seconds flat.

The 2-IN-1 hammock cum swing chair from Airmocks that you see above costs $298, but you can get lower-priced options from the same store starting at $168.
#4: Buy some plants
If you watch interior design shows on Netflix, you’ll realize that designers and stylists always accentuate the living spaces they’re decorating with plants.
Why is this so? Well, a strategically-placed plant can add life to an apartment, and make it feel more homey.

Don’t have a green thumb? Don’t worry. There are plenty of low-maintenance plants which are downright tough to kill. For instance, Monstera plants (pictured above) can survive in full shade, and only needs watering once or twice a week.
#5: Add storage baskets
Storage baskets are a great way of keeping your bits and pieces organized, and they bring some flair to your living space at the same time.

For instance, this SNIDAD rattan storage basket from IKEA works great with Nordic/Scandinavian themed homes.
#6: Get new lights
Lights have a huge impact on how you feel in your space, and if you want to come home to a warm and welcoming apartment, your lights need to reflect that as well.

To help you relax and recharge, we recommend opting for soft, warm lights, such as this KNIXHULT bamboo floor lamp from IKEA.
#7: Replace your shower curtain
Stuck with an old, grotty shower curtain? Replacing it won’t cost much, and it’ll make your shower experience 10x better.
There’s a ton of shower curtains out there, so it’s just a matter of finding one that suits your personality and budget. Here are a few options we like…
