Summary
It was developed in 1964 to house the workers and the families of the nearby industrial areas. Taman means “garden” in Malay, suggesting that Taman Jurong was meant to be a housing estate in a garden, to contrast the heavy adjacent industries. Initially, all the names in Taman Jurong were numbered, from Taman Jurong 1 to Taman Jurong 12 (skipping 11), while the main road running through the estate was just named Taman Jurong.
In 1970, the even-numbered roads were renamed “Yuan Ching Road”, describing sceneries and possibly referring to the “garden” in Taman Jurong, while the odd-numbered roads were renamed “Yung Sheng Road”, describing eternal progress. Later on, the roads were also renamed using the four official languages of Singapore in order to also reflect a multiracial and multilingual society. For example, (Jalan) Tukang and (Jalan) Jentera, referring to “craftsman” and “mill” in Malay respectively, were named.
