What is Singapore National Day?
The National Day in Singapore commemorates the country’s establishment as an independent city-state.
Its origins can be traced back to 1963 when Singapore and the Federations of Malaya, Sarawak, and Sabah merged to form Malaysia. However, due to significant challenges and circumstances, the merger proved to be unviable. As a result, in 1965, Singapore emerged as a sovereign state.
Today, Singaporeans celebrate National Day on August 9th each year, to signify their unity, patriotism, and the nation’s progress.
This is a public holiday in Singapore, with government institutions, schools, and businesses remaining closed.

What happens during Singapore National Day?
One of the highlights of the Singapore National Day is the grand parade, usually at Marina Bay, the National Stadium, or the Padang.
The parade features the participation of various groups, including the Armed Forces, Police Force, Civil Defense Force, representatives from political parties, and members of labour unions. Students from uniformed organisations such as the Girl Guides, Scouts, and Cadet Corps also join in the procession. Adding to the spectacle, the Singapore Air Force presents a captivating flyover with a display of numerous military aircraft.
Every year since 1966, the Prime Minister of Singapore records a National Day Message, which is delivered on the eve of National Day. The message covers domestic and global developments, economic performance and outlook, national priorities, and government plans. Following the address, a fireworks display accompanies the festivities, choir performances, school band shows, and other entertaining presentations.
Although National Day is observed on August 9th annually, preparations and rehearsals start around 3 to 4 months ahead of time, with preview shows commencing approximately two weeks earlier.
