When is the Singapore National Day parade?

As you start planning for Singapore’s National Day celebrations, it’s important to mark your calendars for Friday, 9 August 2024. This date commemorates Singapore’s independence from Malaysia, and you can expect the city to be decked out with national flags, energetic songs, and people proudly dressed in red and white.

The 2024 Singapore National Day Parade (NDP) will be held at the iconic Padang, a site rich with historical significance. But that’s not all; the festivities will continue into the next day, August 10, with heartland celebrations across five locations from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Organised by the People’s Association (PA) in collaboration with the NDP 2024 Executive Committee, these events aim to bring the joy and spirit of the celebrations closer to local communities, allowing everyone to participate and enjoy together.

What is the theme of the NDP this year?

Every year, the NDP theme captures the essence of our country’s journey and aspirations, and 2024 is no different. The theme for this year’s Singapore National Day Parade is “Together, As One United People.” This inspiring message celebrates Singapore’s achievements while emphasising the nation’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

The NDP 2024 logo creatively integrates the number “59” to resemble “SG,” accompanied by five stars symbolising democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality. Adding to the excitement, the theme song “Not Alone” was composed and performed by the talented Benjamin Kheng, offering a fresh take while paying tribute to past beloved NDP tunes.

NDP 2024: Parade and ceremony

The NDP 2024 is an orchestrated blend of tradition and modernity, divided into six dynamic sections. It all kicks off with a lively pre-parade show that sets the stage for what’s to come.

In Chapter 1, you’ll witness a stunning Military Tattoo, followed by the state flag flypast and a presidential ceremonial vehicle drive-past. Don’t miss the ‘Salute-to-the-Nation’ moment, where fighter aircraft execute an impressive bomb burst overhead.

Chapter 2 marks a special milestone, as it commemorates 40 years of Total Defence. For the first time at the Padang, the Dynamic Defence Display (D3) will showcase swift responses to emergencies, highlighting the readiness and resilience of Singapore’s forces.

NDP 2024 show

The NDP show in Chapter 3 promises to be a visual spectacle, featuring performances by 12 artists and over 3,000 performers. This chapter delves into Singapore’s past, present, and future, blending artistry and storytelling.

Exciting new participants, such as the Swift Skating Academy, Voices of Singapore, Shazza, and cellist Olivia Chuang, are set to captivate audiences. You’ll also be part of the multimedia experience, thanks to an LED wristband given to attendees, ensuring everyone feels connected to the show.

The celebrations aren’t confined to the Padang. On August 10, the spirit of NDP will spread to heartland locations, each with its own unique theme and activities.

In Yishun, the theme “Moving Forward, Cherishing Our Past” sets the tone, while Punggol embraces “One HOME.” Over at Bishan, “Unity in Diversity” will be the focus. Paya Lebar will light up with “Lights Up, Power Up,” and Buona Vista will host “Hearts ToGather.”

From 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm, these heartland events will offer carnival games, live performances, and engaging displays from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), and Singapore Police Force (SPF). Enjoy family-friendly activities, hands-on workshops, and mesmerising live stage performances. To cap it all off, fireworks will illuminate the night sky, bringing joy and wonder to neighbourhoods across Singapore.

A highlight of the Singapore National Day Parade is undoubtedly the fireworks, which light up the sky at the Padang just before the National Anthem is played. And if you think that’s all, think again! On August 10, fireworks displays will dazzle audiences in the heartland areas of Bishan, Punggol, Yishun, Paya Lebar, and Buona Vista.

Wondering where to catch the best views of the NDP 2024 fireworks? Here are some top spots:

Marina Bay Sands Boardwalk: Get a close-up view near the Apple store and Louis Vuitton store at The Shoppes. Arrive early to secure a good spot, as it tends to get crowded.

Marina Barrage: This open space is perfect for picnics and distant views of the fireworks. Reach it via the Gardens by the Bay MRT station.

Helix Bridge: Enjoy the fireworks with the ArtScience Museum and Central Business District as your stunning backdrop.

Outdoor Terraces of Funan Mall: Offers clear vantage points from the urban farm on level seven and the roof garden on level R.

Merlion Park: Capture the fireworks with Singapore’s iconic Merlion in the background.

Promenade in Front of Bay East Garden: For a quieter experience, this spot provides access from Marina East Drive, despite ongoing development.

Esplanade: Find an unobstructed view of the fireworks near the outdoor theatre.

Additional aerial displays

Aside from the fireworks, the NDP 2024 will feature thrilling aerial displays by the Republic of Singapore Air Force. For the first time at the Padang, attack helicopters will join the dynamic display from 5:45 pm to 6:50 pm on August 3 and 9.

Look out for 14 aircraft, including a C-130 Hercules, Apache and Chinook helicopters, and F-16 jets. A Chinook helicopter will proudly fly the state flag after 6:45 pm during the National Anthem, followed by an F-16 jets bomb burst. These jets will participate in simulations of aircraft interception and vertical climbs, while Apache helicopters perform an air-sea integrated operation over Marina Bay and the Padang.

Where can I watch the NDP live?

If you’re unable to attend the NDP 2024 in person, fret not! The parade will be broadcast live on television and social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube, allowing you to enjoy the celebrations from the comfort of your home or on the go.

Getting to the NDP 2024

Navigating the NDP festivities is made easy with the Crowd@MarinaBay map, available online from 1:30 pm to 10:00 pm on August 3. This handy tool provides real-time crowd levels and highlights areas that may be closed due to the event.

The map is accessible on computers and mobile devices and will be displayed on television screens at selected MRT stations. It also includes information on available surface and underground walking paths around Marina Bay, helping you avoid crowded areas.
