Nestled in the prime district of Bukit Timah, a new retirement village by the name of St Bernadette Lifestyle Village will help seniors to live independently while keeping an eye on their well-being.
Singapore’s first eldercare facility, a single-storey cream and brown bungalow, is set to start operations in December and will take in just eight residents paying $3,500 a month.
Such eldercare facilities, which are common in Europe and the United States, offer a housing alternative for elderly who do not need intensive medical and nursing care.
The fee includes breakfast, housekeeping and laundry services. Every resident will have his own room with an attached, wheelchair accessible bathroom. Should they fall or need help, they can activate an emergency bell to alert a 24-hour medical concierge.
Residents can also invite guests over for outdoor barbecues or group activities like taiji or mahjong.
“There is quite a lot of resentment among older adults if they are put in nursing homes, especially if they are still able physically, as they fear losing their autonomy,” said Dr Belinda Wee, 51, who opened the facility and runs the Good Shepherd Loft nursing home next door.
Nursing homes fees in Singapore range from $1,200 to $3,500 a month, before government subsidies of 10 to 75 per cent.
